Women struggling to feel seen or heard in sports limits their opportunities. Without proper resources for their mental and physical well-being to flourish, women are disadvantaged. As a former athlete myself, I understand the pressure to succeed implemented by coaches and parents. The feeling of being “inferior” is relatable for many women competing in sports. We are told from a young age that men are more potent and faster, without being told the comparison is inequitable. Women are strong and fast, a message that the sports world must emphasize. Women’s lack of representation is pervasive beyond sports, as we know that white men still dominate positions of power. I aspire for women’s equitable representation in media, sports, and society.
Instilling confidence in young women helps them succeed in the future. Other characteristics like diligence and perseverance are essential to being a successful athlete. Without confidence, women often struggle to feel seen and heard. Empowerment is vital to building trust in young women. I hope to convey the importance of supporting the entire athlete or woman. Young women are highly susceptible to objectification which inhibits confidence. Providing resources like mentoring, proper nutrition, and physical therapy would help young women feel supported. Women of all ages struggle with body image, and sports often put more pressure on our bodies—strength, endurance, and flexibility, as a few of the physical strains in sports. Mental stress could include patience, commitment, and patience.
Mental health in sports is crucial and has recently received more attention due to female college athletes’ series of tragic suicides. These women’s stories and hardships will not go unnoticed, and we have a responsibility to protect women. Coaches have notoriously overlooked the mental well-being of their athletes while expecting them to dedicate themselves to their prospective sports. Athletes are prone to depression and anxiety, so being proactive in providing access to mental or physical therapy is incredibly important. We must increase awareness of student-athletes struggling to balance their responsibilities while maintaining their happiness. Ultimately, an athlete can succeed while struggling with depression or anxiety, even when it’s not evident.
Moving forward, I hope that all levels of sport emphasize the importance of taking care of athletes. Young women should feel empowered and protected, especially in sports. Focusing on the looks of young women takes away from their value and potential as athletes. Empowering girls to feel good in their bodies and safe in their environment should be the standard.
