I decided to shift my focus to non-profit organizations that empower women in sports for today’s blog. When researching the variety of non-profits, I found a series of inspirational organizations. I feel most inspired by the global perspective of the non-profit WomenSport International (WSI). WSI is a research-based organization aiming to advocate for women’s sports. WomenSport consists of an executive committee and advisory board that oversees initiatives, partners, and conferences. The organization embodies the message I hope to relay in my writing: women belong in sports.
WSI is currently celebrating the 50th anniversary of Title IX in collaboration with the #DemandNine campaign. The national campaign aims to reach millions of people by amplifying the need for gender equity, specifically in sports. Title IX was enacted in 1972 by the federal civil rights committee. The Title has helped create pathways for women to succeed with access to necessary resources. Fighting the systemic disparities athletes face has helped discourage sexual discrimination in sports. The Title IX Anniversary Coalition seeks 1 million signatures to support their initiative. The Coalition consists of the Billie Jean King Leadership Initiative, the National Women’s Law Center, and the Women’s Sports Foundation.
WSI’s website mentions the partnership with European Women in Sport and the European College of Sports Science. I grew up in the Netherlands and felt personally connected to these organizations. Creating opportunities for women in sports worldwide is incredibly important, given that the American sports system often seems overarching. When I lived in Europe, sports weren’t as competitive or serious. The American sports world can feel daunting to foreigners as Americans often start at a younger and have sports teams associated with our schools. I think recognizing the differences in sports will help establish awareness about sports cultures in different countries.
I am excited about the opportunities to get involved with WomenSport International. Supporters can sign up for a membership with WSI providing access to expert research, upcoming events, and international conferences. The access provides unique insight into global gender disparity. I am grateful that organizations like WSI have persevered to provide the greatest participation possibility for young women like myself. WomenSport was founded by five inspirational women who acknowledged the need for an international sports organization focused on increasing youth participation in sports. By expanding the horizons of women’s sports, we have more opportunities to succeed.
